Feast Day of Righteous Euthymius the Great today

The Church today venerates the memory of Righteous Euthymius the Great.

The saint, who hailed from Melitene in Armenia, was the son of pious parents Paul and Dionysia. He was born in roughly 377.

As his mother was childless and considered barren, he was named Euthymius – which means «good cheer» or «joy» in Greek – for this is what his parents experienced at his birth.

Euthymius is considered, among the early Church fathers, as a » vessel of divine utterance,» as one historian writes.

He was the instructor and elder of St. Sabbas the Sanctified.

Having lived for 96 years, he reposed in 473, on January 20.

A feature is posted today on the pages of the Orthodoxia news agency on the life and miracles attributed to St. Euthymius.
