Waging war against us isn’t all that easy for the demons. During the battle, they feel sorrow and unease, especially when they’re faced with formidable opponents, in other words, with holy and perfected Christians. Otherwise, we wouldn’t be talking at all about a battle and a struggle between us and the demons, but simply about our defeat and destruction, because they’d rout us straight away, without let or hindrance. So there’s concern on both sides. Defeat is painful for both sides and causes turmoil, whereas victory produces joy. So if they’re able to best us on occasion, we, in turn, can pay them back.
The highest peak on the Holy Mountain is that of Athos, which is why the whole of the peninsula is named after it. The whole peninsula is full of monasteries and sketes. It’s dedicated to God and, in particular, to His Most Holy Birth-Giver, which is why it is also known as the Bower of Our Most Holy Lady.
