People who don’t confess their sins are constantly under the burden of guilt and are a long way from God. This is why their soul mourns and suffers. The abnormal moral state to which sinners are subject, the relentless strictures, are caused by awareness in the soul which recognizes its sin and seeks respite. The soul seeks confession because it knows the divine commandment, because it knows that’s the only means of reconciliation and rapprochement with God.
In the beginning, God made Adam and Eve free. They could accept His love or reject it; they could make good use of the freedom or misuse it. The commandment not to eat of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, which was planted in the middle of Paradise, gave them this opportunity. According to Saint John Chrysostom, the knowledge of good was obedience and the knowledge of evil was disobedience. Observance of the commandment, obedience, would have helped our first ancestors to practice the good use of freedom, to become accustomed to it and to be confirmed in it. They would have directed their freedom permanently towards God and made their will identical to that of the Creator. ...
