The ideal for the continuance of humanity cannot be the right of the powerful but the globalization of solidarity Interview by Margarita Pournara, I KATHIMERINI April 12th, Sunday edition The voice of Archbishop Anastasios of Albania from the other end of the telephone exudes as always serenity and wisdom. Either in person or from a distance, His presence sooths; in all difficult conjectures and even more so in this unprecedented situation we experience on the universal level. He Himself is now in confinement, seeing His daily life drastically changed: “Here in Albania, we too are adjusting to the government’s orders and the instructions of the medical authorities. After a discussion with the members of the Holy Synod we promptly made the ...
Keeping quiet is the result of a regal and noble upbringing. Those who know how to hold their tongue also know when to speak. Because keeping silence is the result of prudence, no less than the ability to speak prudently. So those who don’t know how to be quiet don’t know how to talk, either.
Message By His All-Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew at the Beginning of Holy and Great Week (Lazarus Saturday, April 11, 2020) * * * Brethren and children in the Lord, Once again, Holy and Great Lent has come to a conclusion. Today, we joyfully celebrated the resurrection of Christ’s intimate friend, Lazarus, which serves as a prefigurement of the “common resurrection.” Tomorrow, we shall enjoy the feast of Palm Sunday, when we shall chant: “Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest!” So we are entering Holy and Great Week with compunction and humility, having run the course of a Great Lent that was different from previous ones. The pandemic of the novel coronavirus has changed our daily life and our ...

Let us be insatiable as regards divine grace. May we never have our fill.
Thirty years ago when I was a young novice at Saint Tikhon’s Monastery, I recall being moved while reading an account of the Athonite Elder Callinicus the Hesychast (1853–1930) who went to the austere community of Father Daniel, a community in the Athonite desert always lacking milk, cheese, and eggs. Father Daniel explained to the young Callinicus , “At Pascha, we have no red eggs to eat. One that is preserved from year to year is brought out that we may see it and remember the Feast.” (Archimandrite Cherubim, Contemporary Ascetics of Mount Athos, 180). This same Elder Callinicus later chose to lock himself up in his tiny cell on the side of a steep slope of Katounakia for forty-five ...

The Beginning of the Cross: Saturday of Lazarus “Having fulfilled Forty Days… we ask to see the Holy Week of Thy Passion.” With these words sung at Vespers of Friday, Lent comes to its end and we enter into the annual commemoration of Christ’s suffering, death and Resurrection. It begins on the Saturday of Lazarus. The double feast of Lazarus’ resurrection and the Entrance of the Lord to Jerusalem (Palm Sunday) is described in liturgical texts as the “beginning of the Cross” and is to be understood therefore, within the context of the Holy Week. The common Troparion of these days explicitly affirms that by raising Lazarus from the dead, Christ confirmed the truth of general resurrection. It is highly significant ...
