Ο ιεραπόστολος της Αλάσκας Ιωάννης (αργότερα, όταν έγινε μητροπολίτης Μόσχας, πήρε το όνομα Ινοκέντιος), έφτασε για πρώτη φορά στην Αλάσκα το 1828 μαζί με τη γυναίκα, τη μητέρα, τον γιο και τον αδελφό του. Δεκατέσσερις μήνες ταξίδευε με τα μέσα της εποχής εκείνης, άλλοτε με έλκηθρα και άλλοτε με πρωτόγονες βάρκες – σχεδίες, ώσπου να φτάσει στο νησί της Αλάσκας Ουναλάσκα, όπου κατοικούσαν Αλεούτιοι. Απίστευτες μας φαίνονται οι διηγήσεις για τις συνθήκες της ζωής εκείνων των ανθρώπων. Άγιος Ιννοκέντιος Βενιαμίνωφ (31 Μαρτίου) Ο άγιος Ιννοκέντιος Βενιαμίνωφ είναι μια από τις σημαντικότερες προσωπικότητες της Ορθόδοξης Εκκλησίας, ο πιο μεγάλος Ρώσος ιεραπόστολος. Γεννήθηκε στις 26 Αυγούστου 1797 στο χωριό Ανζίσκογιε της Σιβηρίας, της επαρχίας Ιρκούτσκ, από πτωχούς και ευσεβείς γονείς, τον Ευσέβιο και τη Θέκλα και το όνομά του ήταν Ιωάννης. Στα ρωσικά το όνομά του ήταν Ιβάν Γιεφσέγιεβιτς Ποπώφ. Του έδωσαν ως επίθετο το όνομα του κοιμηθέντος Αρχιεπισκόπου του Ιρκούτσκ Βενιαμίν. Σε ηλικία πέντε ετών έμεινε ορφανός από πατέρα, αλλά ο θείος του, ο ιερομόναχος Δαβίδ, του εξασφάλισε το 1806 μια θέση στο Θεολογικό Σεμινάριο του Ιρκούτσκ.
